We are working at standardizing the type of animal we raise. The traits that we are breeding into the herd include:Good disposition, masculine traits for a bull and feminine traits for a cow.We are selecting for good physical conformation and good coloring. For conformation we are wanting a straight top line, sufficient length, good muscle in the hips, a medium ear and polled. For height we aren’t targeting the smallest or the largest of the range. The color we are seeking is the characteristic Hereford pattern focusing on a dark red solid color on most of the body with a contrast of white face and under belly.
Animal Husbandry
We find our Miniature Herefords to be one of God’s greatest gifts and strive to practice good animal husbandry by administering essential vaccinations (just like you would for your kids), fly control, trace minerals, good forage and clean water. We spoil our cattle with treats every-time we see them and they come running if they spot us first. It’s gotten so bad they will stand at the gate at 6:15 in the morning waiting for their snack. Raising Miniature Herefords has been addictive to the point where the whole family has gotten involved including my parents, my kids and friends.
We started our herd with 4 different heifers from three separate herds (Long Creek Farms,Wolf Creek Farms & Sandy Hills Farm) all the heifers bred to separate bulls. From there we continually select for desired traits and add outside genetics to augment the gene pool.
